Rapids Beanie: Free Crochet Pattern – Child Sizes

This crochet hat pattern is part of the Christmas Hat Crochet Along I am hosting with my friend Katie from Salty Pearl Crochet. You can find more details about this crochet along and links to the other hat patterns HERE.

I actually had an entirely different hat pattern ready to go for this event and last minute, I changed my mind. I had an idea and just had to get it hooked ASAP. So here we are haha. This crochet hat comes in 3 different sizes: 12-24 months, toddler and child. I have an adult version (men’s and ladies) of this hat available here. Gotta love hats for the whole family.

This hat is based on the base pattern of my Callie Horse Hat. I just changed which loops I crocheted into. For the increasing rounds you’ll crochet into the back loop only and then the textured portion you’ll alternate between the front and back loop. I love how sometimes the simplest changes can make an entirely different project.

I used one of my favorite worsted weight value yarns for this, Bernat Super Value, but feel free to substitute a similar worsted weight yarn. I would be careful of ones that are a little thin though (Caron Simply Soft, Lion Brand Heartland) as the hat will be a little on the small side. Obviously, I chose to use 2 colors but this would look just as great in a solid color too, or stripes, or maybe even a Caron Cake!!

-Bernat Super Value Yarn in 2 colors or similar #4/worsted weight yarn

–5mm/H Clover Amour Crochet Hook

-Needle to weave in ends

Gauge and Sizing

-Gauge: 7 dc x 4 rows = 2 in

-Finished Hats Measure

-12-24 months: 6.5 in tall x 7.5 in wide

-Toddler/Preschooler: 7 in tall x 8.5 in wide

-Child: 7.5 in tall x 9 in wide

Abbreviations

-I use US Terminology

-Dc: double crochet

-Sl st: slip stitch

-BLO: back loop only

-FLO: front loop only

-Sc: single crochet

Notes

-Ch 2 does not count as a double crochet.

-This pattern is worked in joined rounds

-Join each round to the top of the 1^st dc with a sl st.

-Red Heart Super Saver and Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice would also work great for this pattern.

12-24 Months Size

Rnd 1: Using main color, make a Magic Circle, Ch 2, 10 dc in ring. Cinch ring closed and join. (10)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as ch 2, 2 dc in each st around hat. Join (20)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, working in BLO, 2 dc in same st as ch 2, dc in next. * 2 dc in next, dc in next, repeat from * around the hat. Join. (30)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, working in BLO, 2 dc in same st as ch 2, dc in next 2 sts. * 2 dc in next, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * around the hat. Join. (40)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, working in BLO, 2 dc in same st as ch 2, dc in next 3 sts. * 2 dc in next, dc in next 3 sts, repeat from * around the hat. Join with sl st to top if 1^st dc (50)
