This square is the second afghan square I designed for the Creative Crossings afghan, you can find my first crochet square pattern and more information about the afghan here. It features a pretty aran crochet flower made by using crochet post stitches, bobbles, popcorns and lots of patience.

The design for this square was inspired by a square on a knit sampler blanket my mom gave to me. I have been saying for years I want to make a crochet version of that square, and so I finally did.
A couple things to note about this crochet pattern. If you want your square to measure 12 inches be sure to check your gauge. My friend Maria at Maria’s Blue Crayon has a post all about checking your gauge.
If you are using a thicker worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver, Caron One Pound, Vanna’s Choice…) you may have to go down at least 1 hook size This will also result in a stiffer square. Red Heart Soft is one of the thinner worsted weight yarns out there, Lion Brand Heartland and Caron Simply Soft would make lovely substitutes in this pattern.
That being said we all crochet differently and sometimes things end up a hair too big or too small. If that’s the case, feel free to add or subtract singe crochet rounds at the very end of the pattern.
This is definitively not a beginners square, you need to be familiar with working post stitches and understand how crochet cables work.

I should note that since I have been sitting on these chicken scratch pattern notes for about a year I did have to change the center of the flower. I could not get the original lacy puff stitch design to work no matter what I tried. Instead I opted to make it a lightly textured center by using a combination of single and treble crochet stitches. So, your flower center will look like the one below, not the one in the featured photo above.

You will be working in joined rounds now.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, *sc-pc in next, sc in next. Repeat evenly around. Placing 3 sc in each corner stitch. Join top of 1st sc with sl st.
NOTE: There should be approximately 17 sc-pc stitches on each side of the square. This round does not have to be exact, as long as you are spacing your stitches evenly and you have 16-17 sc-pc’s it will work out.
Rnd 2 & 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, and in each st around, placing 3 sc in each corner stitch. On last round, finish off and weave in ends.
