Here is the original square made by Marie. She made hers with a pretty red flower in the center. Mine is pictured below. I wanted to use all 4 of my colors so I added a few more color changes.

Notes

This square was fun to make! I love the texture of the crossed double crochets. There are so many color possibilities with this square.

Sizing: My square ended up a little small. Instead of adding more single crochet round to the end, I opted to replace the single crochets in round 14 with double crochets in the back loop. After that I did one round of single crochet in the back loop, which brought my square up to 12 inches.

Here’s what I did: I’ll make a list of where I changed color and the small changes I made.

I used my 5 mm crochet hook and Vanna’s Choice yarn in the colors fisherman, linen, taupe and silver gray

For rounds that use double crochets to start, I used a ch 2 instead of a ch 1. For rounds that I started a new color in a corner, I chained 3 and counted it as a double crochet.

Rnd 1: Silver Gray

Rnd 2: Silver Gray

Rnd 3: Sliver Gray

Rnd 4: Silver Gray

Rnd 5: Taupe

Rnd 6: Taupe

Rnd 7: Taupe

Rnd 8: Taupe

Rnd 9: Linen

Rnd 10: Linen

Rnd 11: Fisherman

Rnd 12: Fisherman

Rnd 13: Taupe – I completely messed up this round by doing to many stitches and my square ended up looking like a filly kale leaf so I’m making you a note. There should be 2 stitches skipped between each group of 3 dc.

Rnd 14: Silver Gray – This is the round I replaced with double crochet. I joined yarn in a corner, ch 3 (counted as a double crochet), dc in same space, * working in back loops only, dc in each stitch across to next corner, (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 space. Repeat from * 2 more times. Dc in each stitch to beginning corner. (2dc, ch 2) in beginning ch-2 space. Join to top of ch 3 with sl st.

*Rnd 15: Taupe – This was an extra round not listed in the pattern. I followed the instructions for round 14 for this round, the counts were different but stitches are the same.

I have not blocked my square yet but plan to. It is mostly flat and square so I’m just going to lightly hit it with some steam.
