So lately I’ve been a little obsessed with Downton Abbey.. please please tell me I’m not alone… I love the Dowager Countess and I think Maggie Smith is perfect for her role. I started this hat while watching her in Downton Abbey and finished it watching Hook, where to my surprise Maggie Smith plays Wendy. This hat was practically begging to be named Maggie.
I crocheted this hat using Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Thick & Quick…. my absolute favorite super bully yarn. Its soft, light and cozy… just like this hat (see what i did there ?). Perfect for those chilly winter days!

Your pattern was so fun and easy to follow. I whipped out two of these babies today while watching Death in Paradise (I highly recommend).
I find this pattern confusing, as I’m not sure how you would ch. 1, and then 2 esc in that same stitch as the ch. 1. Do you go backwards and do the esc into the stitch where you slip stitched? I’ve tried 2 of your patterns, and I can’t seem to follow them. Do you have videos to show what you mean by this?
I’m sorry your having trouble Diane! After you chain 1, place 2 esc stitches into the stitch right at the base of the chain one.
What size is this for? Adult?
Yes, this is adult size. Baby and child sizes are available on Ravelry. 🙂
I am a beginner crocheter and wonder how many chains do I do to start this?
Hi Jo, this hat is worked in the round from the top down starting with a magic circle (you can find a tutorial HERE ) If you wanted you could chain 3 or 4 and join them with a slip stitch to form a ring and work your stitches from round 1 in that ring. If you are unfamiliar with working in the round all together I highly receomment checking out this post by Brittany from BHooked: The Ultimate Guide to Crocheting in the Round Let me know if you have any more questions!
Great pattern! Wool Ease Thick and Quick is my FAV yarn too?
Thank you Sierra!
