The Maggie Chunky Beanie | Free Easy Crochet Pattern | The Unraveled Mitten

The Maggie Beanie is a chunky crochet hat pattern perfect for beginners. If you’ve been wanting to try making a crochet hat, this would be a great pattern to start with.

It uses a super bulky yarn and a large hook which make this hat quick to make and very cozy. It’s worked from the top down. You’ll start with a flat circle and then add rows for length. The adult size of this pattern is listed below but the PDF version also includes sizes from baby to adult.

You may purchase and Ad-Free PDF version of this pattern that includes sizes 6-12 months, 12-24 months, toddler, child and adult on Etsy or Ravelry

I chose to use an extended single crochet stitch for this hat. It is a variation of single crochet that involves making an extra chain or ‘yarn over, pull through loop’ before you pull through the final 2 loops. The written instructions are below. I love how it looks like little pebbles.

  1. Your pattern was so fun and easy to follow. I whipped out two of these babies today while watching Death in Paradise (I highly recommend).

  2. I find this pattern confusing, as I’m not sure how you would ch. 1, and then 2 esc in that same stitch as the ch. 1. Do you go backwards and do the esc into the stitch where you slip stitched? I’ve tried 2 of your patterns, and I can’t seem to follow them. Do you have videos to show what you mean by this?

    1. I’m sorry your having trouble Diane! After you chain 1, place 2 esc stitches into the stitch right at the base of the chain one.

    1. Hi Jo, this hat is worked in the round from the top down starting with a magic circle (you can find a tutorial HERE ) If you wanted you could chain 3 or 4 and join them with a slip stitch to form a ring and work your stitches from round 1 in that ring. If you are unfamiliar with working in the round all together I highly receomment checking out this post by Brittany from BHooked: The Ultimate Guide to Crocheting in the Round Let me know if you have any more questions!
