The kids will love this fun crochet horse hat with stand-up ears and even a mane! Perfect for back to school, Halloween or just pretend play.
*Updated 10/2017 to add more sizes!! 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-24 months, Toddler/Preschooler, Child and Adult.
As a mom, crocheting things for my kids is pretty much a given. My oldest daughter is already requesting one of these in about every horse color imaginable and of course a unicorn version as well. It always so fun to see their little eyes light up when they see a vision of something they had in their head come to life in yarn form…. and bonus points if they can wear it for playtime.
I made the toddler size for my youngest, who is 3, but it also fits my 5 and almost 7 year old. I love that crochet is stretchy so I can really get some miles out of the hats I make for my kids.

Border and Braids
Join your accent color (I used baby pink) to tip of earflap leaving a long tail because it will be incorporated into the braids. Sc evenly around the hat. Join to top of first sc with sl st. Finish off leaving a long tail.
For each braid cut 6 lengths of yarn about 36 inches in length. Using your hook pull the strands through corner of earflap so an even amount hangs on both sides of the earflap. Tie a knot in the top. Divide the yarn in 3 sections and braid. Tie knot at bottom. Trim. Be sure to make each braid the same length and be sure to use the same tension.
Ear Patterns
The ears are worked in continuous rounds. I find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch of the round.
When you finish off, leave a long tail so you can sew the ear onto the hat.

Is there a special technique or stitch?
I am wondering how you connect or sew the pieces to the hat I don’t see any pics.
Use your yarn and tapestry needle and sew them on.
I am confused on how to connect or sew the pieces to the hat I don’t see any pics.
Hi, I would love to make this for my new granddaughter but I can’t get these red heart colours from my usual supplier!! Would Caron simply soft be a good equivalent yarn to use??
Hi ,I was wondering how many pace between the earflaps. Mine are two close to each other …thank you love this pattern.
.
Hi I was just wondering is the ear flap and the ear 2 different pieces? Do you make the ear separate and sew it where the ear flap is? Thanks
Yes they are 2 separate things. The earflaps cover the persons ears when they wear it and the horse ears are sewn onn near the top of the hat. ?
Thank you so much! I don’t know what I was thinking! I know what ear flaps are but I think I read it wrong! Lol thank you for your help!?
No worries Morgan! You’re welcome. ?

Hi, I am working on the 3-6 month size of your pattern, and I may be wrong, but I noticed a couple of errors in the 3-6 month earflap instructions. On Row 2, instead of HDC in the next 6, it should be HDC in the next 4, and also on Row 4, instead of DC in the next 2, it should be HDC in the next 2. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I couldn’t get the earflap to look correct as written. My two-month old is named Callie, so I was excited to find this pattern. 🙂 Thanks!
You were absolutely correct Amy, I just updated the pattern. Thank you. When I first designed this hat a few years ago it was for a little girl named Callie.
I would really love this pattern in a variety of sizes also. Thanks for sharing with us.

You’re welcome Tammy! I am working on more sizes (baby-adult) now. I should have them up in a couple weeks. ☺
I would love this pattern in a variety of sizes. I want to make this for my 7 year old (which I think I can adjust accordingly). I also want to make this for a baby gift (3-6 month). I will attempt to adjust that as well, but if you publish other sizes, that would be awesome. Thank you so much for the free pattern. It is absolutely adorable and I cannot wait to make this for my little horse lover.
