I’ve been seeing these pretty twisted crochet headband patterns or earwarmer patterns everywhere lately and I decided that it was time I made one for myself.
The idea is you crochet a flat rectangle and then fold the ends together in a special magic way and sew them up (don’t worry I have pictures of that part). I was a little mystified on how these twisted headbands were made but once I tried it I found it to be very easy. And now of course I want to make one in every stitch with every yarn.

5mm crochet hook
Tapestry needle

I have been really trying to use my stashed yarn for my patterns and when I came across this lonely partial skein of Lion Brand Wool-Ease on my yarn shelves, I knew this would be the perfect yarn to use on my twisted crochet headband.
Wool-Ease is a worsted weight wool blend yarn. It’s 80% acrylic and 20% wool just like its Super Bulky sister. All the colors are a little bit rustic and heathered. This is the color Wheat.
Some yarns that are similar would be:
Gauge and Sizing
Gauge: 8 sts x 5 rows in pattern stitch = 2 in
Size: 4.5 in wide x approx. 19 in long
This is an adult-sized pattern but its really easy to modify the size! Just make your starting chain longer or shorter and then crochet less or more rows. There’s no special stitch multiple because the whole earwarmer is made of Half Double Crochets.
Abbreviations
I use US terminology
Ch(s): chain(s)
Hdc: half double crochet
FLO: front loop only
BLO: back loop only
St(s): stitch(es)
Tips and Notes for the Stoneport Earwarmer Pattern
-this pattern is worked flat and then seamed together
-ch 1 does not count as a stitch
-add this to your queue on Ravelry!
I love when basic stitches make a big impact. All you need to know to make this twisted crochet ear warmer is how to half double crochet in the back loop and front loop. This is a great pattern for a beginner.
If you’ve made my Superior Beanie pattern, you’ll find that this ribbing pattern is the same!

Simple Crochet Headband Pattern | Stoneport Ear Warmer
Ch 19 to start
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (18)
Row 2: Ch 1, working in FLO, hdc in same st as ch 1 and in each st across. Turn. (18)
Row 3: Ch 1, working in BLO, hdc in same st as ch 1 and in each st across. Turn. (18)
Row 4-46: Repeat rows 2 & 3
After last row finish off and weave in ends.
Making the Twist
Step 1: Lay your ear warmer flat with the front side facing up. Fold it in half and overlap the short edges like shown in the picture
Step 2: Fold the top layer behind the back layer
Step 3: Now, fold back layer so its in front of the top layer
Step 4: Sew through all layers. I just used a whip stitch. Weave in ends. And turn it so the ribbing is shown on the outside.
That’s it! What did you think, was it easier than you thought?
What are the dimensions of the rectangle before sewing the twist?
At the end, where the instructions say “sew through all layers”, the photo shows the needle but no yarn and I can’t tell if you are just tacking that corner or if you whip stitch the whole width of the band.
Sew through all 4 layers the whole width. 🙂
Easy pattern I’m going to try it.sometime today. Chrochet is my first love. I have been doing since I was a young girl I’m now 84 yrs.young. From
