In this tutorial, you will learn how to do a 2×2 Tunisian Crochet Rib Stitch. Tunisian crochet ribbing is made by doing combinations of the Tunisian knit stitch and the Tunisian purl stitch. To practice this stitch we are making a dishcloth.

There are many different variations of Tunisian Rib Stitch. Today we are going to do 2×2 ribbing, which means, 2 knit stitches, followed by 2 purl stitches. One thing to note about Tunisian crochet ribbing is that it is not stretchy like we are used to when we think of ribbing. There is almost no give in this stitch.

50 yds Lily Sugar and Cream (or similar) 100% cotton worsted weight yarn

6.5mm Tunisian crochet hook

Scissors and yarn needle.

Abbreviations and Special Stitches

Ch(s): chain(s)

Yo: yarnover

Tks (Tunisian knit stitch): insert hook from front to back between front and back vertical bars, yo, pull up loop

Tps (Tunisian purl Stitch): with yarn in front of work, insert hook from right to left under front vertical bar, move yarn to back, yo and pull up loop

Lts (Last Tunisian stitch): insert hook under both outer vertical bars, yo, pull up loop. This creates a nice clean edge

2×2 Tunisian Rib Stitch Dishcloth Pattern

Row 1

A (forward pass): Ch any multiple of 26, starting in back bump of 2nd ch from hook, pull up loop in each ch across. (26 loops on hook)

B (return pass): yo, pull through 1 loop, *yo, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across. 1 loop remains on hook.

Row 2:

A: *Tks 2, tps 2, repeat from * across to last st. Lts in last. (26 loops on hook)

B: yo, pull through 1 loop, *yo, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across. 1 loop remains on hook.

Row 3-23: Repeat row 2 for pattern. After return pass of last row, bind off and weave in ends.
