This is block 8 of our 2023 Stash Busting Crochet Along Sampler. I am seeing a theme with this year’s blocks and that is texture! The Spiky Granny Square, designed by Kate from Crochet With Frankie Kate, features a spike stitch center with a post stitch texture for a border.

My first adventure using spike stitches was when I included them on our Row by Row blanket we did last year and I was thrilled to be able to use them again in this square. The textures play off of each other so well.
Sizing: As I got closer to the end of this square, I quickly realized that it was going to be nowhere near large enough. I probably should have checked my gauge and then I would have discovered that I needed to use a larger hook, but I like to live on the edge. This surprised me because usually, I am a fairly loose crocheter.
I’ll make notes down below for specific rows, but for the last 2 rows, instead of using single crochets, I used double and half double crochets. I also needed to add one more row overall.
My square will need some blocking as well so this will help me get to 12×12.
Here’s What I did: I will outline my color changes and any notes I have for each row below. Kate made her square using 2 colors, I used 4 in mine.
Remember though, you are working on YOUR blanket. If you don’t want to change color where I did, then please don’t. My notes and color changes below are not hard and fast rules.

As a reminder, these patterns are not mine. If you would like the purchase the PDF, most designers have them available in their shops. Also, is up to the designer to decide if she wants to publish a video or photo tutorial for the specific pattern. It is illegal for me to make a video of someone else’s pattern.
