The raised herringbone crochet stitch is worked using post stitches on the diagonal and creates an interesting raised zig-zag pattern on your project.
I think this stitch is so beautiful and it is fun to make too! After a couple of set-up rows, there is a 2-row repeat and one of those rows is plain half double crochet. It is not reversible. The texture only shows on the front side of your project and all the post stitches are worked in the the row 2 rows below the current row.
If you made our 2022 Row-by-Row Sampler Blanket then this stitch might seem familiar, we used this in part 5 of the Crochet Along.
I think this stitch would be prefect to use on just about any project you wanted an all-over textured pattern on. A hat, baby blanket, or pillow cover is what comes to my mind first.

2024 Crochet Along: Square 15
We are working on block 14 of our Terrific Textures Crochet Along. This is a year-long CAL running here on The Unraveled Mitten, we are learning a new textured crochet stitch every week other week. Around the end of October, we will join our stitch sampler squares into a cozy blanket.
Don’t want to jump around to see each square?
You can purchase the PDF version of this pattern in my shop. It includes the materials list, all 20 squares as well as instructions for the joining and border.
You can find written instructions for this stitch above. You’ll notice that the instructions are written so you can use this stitch in other places besides this CAL. You can find my notes on how I made my 12-inch square listed below.
- 122 yds worsted weight yarn, Red Heart With Love used in sample
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors + Yarn Needle
- Gauge: 7 sts x 6 rows = 2 in worked in pattern stitch
- Hint: measure gauge on back side
- Finished Size: 12 in x 12 in
This is what I did:
- Ch 39 to start (1st row should have 38 sts)
- Follow stitch instructions above until your square is the desired size. For me this was 29 rows. You may need more or less.
- After final row do not finish off, move on to border.
Border Instructions: Do not finish off, working on front side of square, ch 1, sc evenly around placing (sc, ch 2 sc) in each corner space. Join to top of 1st sc with sl st. Finish off weave in ends. Block to 12 inches. (Each side should have 37 stitches)
