The first square of the 2026 Tunisian Crochet Along uses the Tunisian Simple Stitch done in stripes. I thought this was the perfect place to begin our Tunisian crochet adventure because this is a foundational Tunisian crochet stitch.

If you are brand new to Tunisian crochet, I highly recommend checking out my Beginner’s Guide to Tunisian Crochet blog post. It lays out all the information you need to get started.

This is not the only time we will be using this stitch in this crochet along because it makes a great blank palette for things like stripes, colorwork, surface crochet, and cross-stitching.

You can find out more about our 2026 Tunisian Crochet Sampler Crochet Along here! Every other week throughout the year, a new square pattern featuring a different Tunisian crochet stitch or technique will be released.

Changing Color in Tunisian Crochet

I decided to make this square in stripes so we could practice changing color at the beginning of the row. This is done much like in regular crochet, where you finish the final stitch of the row in the new color.

Complete your return pass until 2 loops remain on your hook.

Drape your new color yarn over your hook.

Pull through the final 2 loops.

You are now ready start your next row using the new color.

  1. Question about the border – with making 35 sc on 32 rows, do you count the 2 chain corner stitches into the total somehow?

  2. To increase the size by increasing number of chains, would you advise any multiple to use? In case any of the scheduled future patterns start with a certain multiple of stitches…

I am using DK yarn since that’s what I’ve got most in my stash. So I’d have to increase the number of rows and stitches

    1. For this stitch you can start with any number of chains. I will always include the multiple needed to modify size in the notes section of the pattern.

    1. You have a couple options:

      1. A bigger hook
      2. More starting chains (for this stitch it is any number)
      3. More border rounds.
      4. Just leave it and make sure all your squares are around 10 inches. Your blanket will overall be a little smaller but you can add a bigger border to compensate that.

My square before I added a border and blocked it was around 10.5-11 inches. I usually always factor in the square border adding around and inch.

  3. Then would it be 35 sts on all sides of the border like it says in the border section? As written, it comes out to 32 sts on the sides and 35 on the chain/bind off rows.

    1. Yes, 35 stitches on each side. I had to just add in a few stitches spread out sort of evenly to make it 35. All our squares will have between 34-36 stitches for the border round. This will make joining easier.

  4. I’m afraid there’s a mistake on the pattern. If I’m not wrong there should be 35 rows and going by the picture there should be another 2 rows of color B. I.e. instead of row 32, there should be another repeat of rows 4-7.

    1. The written pattern is correct. I had to remake my original square becuase it turned out to large. Updated photos are coming soon.
