This textured stitch features alternating blocks of Tunisian Knit and Purl stitches, giving it a classic woven look. It is one of those stitches that looks fancy and impressive, yet is built from simple, repeatable steps.
This is the 3rd block in the Country Cottage Tunisian Sampler, our 2026 year-long crochet along. It’s not too late to join the party. You can find all the details you need to get started here.
Every other week throughout the year, a new square pattern featuring a different Tunisian crochet stitch or technique will be released.

Tunisian Basketweave Stitch Basics
This is a quick building stitch and is a little less bulky than the basketweave stitch worked in standard crochet. It really looks similar to knit basketweave!
To crochet this stitch, you’ll need to know how to make the Tunisian Knit Stitch and the Purl Stitch.
Step 1: After you complete the standard foundation row, you’ll start the next row with 5 knit stitches, then 5 purl stitches, and repeat that sequence across the row for 4 rows total.
Step 2: Then you’ll switch up the pattern, starting the next row with 5 purl stitches, then 5 knit stitches and repeat that sequence across for 4 rows.
Step 3: Then you’ll just repeat steps 1 and 2 until your project is the desired size.
I find it easier to count rows using the purl stitches because they form little ridges that are easy to see.

Tunisian Basketweave Stitch Sizing
Like in standard basketweave, you can change the size of the squares by using a different starting chain multiple. Just count how many stitches across you want each square to be, then double it. Make your starting chain in that number and then add 1 more “square’s” worth of chains to the end.
For example, today our blocks will all be 5 stitches wide by 4 rows tall. I like to use an odd number of blocks across the row, so our starting chain multiple is 10 + 5 more.

**Note: the number of single crochets worked on each raw edge should be the same number as the top and bottom edges. You may have to add or subtract stitches to get 35 on the raw edges. Each square will have around 35 (+/- a couple stitches, depending on the stitch multiple) to make joining easy and flat.
