The Tunisian Crochet Mitered Square is a unique technique that creates a striking diagonal design by starting with a long foundation row and decreasing in the center towards the opposite corner. These decreases pull the long foundation row into a square shape.

These squares can be made in any size and are perfect for blankets, dishcloths, scarves, and any other modular type project.

This is the 6th block in the Country Cottage Tunisian Sampler, our 2026 year-long crochet along. It’s not too late to join the party. You can find all the details you need to get started here.

Every other week throughout the year, a new square pattern featuring a different Tunisian crochet stitch or technique will be released.

Modifying the Size of a Mitered Square

To modify the size of this square, you’ll need to know one thing – how many stitches you want on each side. To figure this out, make a chain a little longer than you need and work a couple of rows in Tunisian simple stitch. Then measure out how many stitches are in the length you want for the side.

Take that number of stitches and multiply it by 2 and then add 1.

For Example:

If I want to my square to be 6 inches x 6 inches. I would make a chain around 7-8 inches long. Then work 2 or 3 rows of tunisian simple stitch.

Let’s say I measured and I have 20 stitches in 6 inches.

20 x 2 = 40

40 + 1 = 41

My starting chain would be 41 for a 6 inch square.

Your starting chain will always be on add number.

Using this strategy, you can make a mitered square in any size you want!

You can also make your squares a solid color or using stripes. For the little square I made in my video tutorial, I changed color at the end of each return pass.
