The Callie Horse Hat: Free Crochet Pattern

Spread the love

The kids will love this fun crochet horse hat with stand-up ears and even a mane! Perfect for back to school, Halloween or just pretend play.

As a mom, crocheting things for my kids is pretty much a given. My oldest daughter is already requesting one of these in about every horse color imaginable and of course a unicorn version as well. It always so fun to see their little eyes light up when they see a vision of something they had in their head come to life in yarn form…. and bonus points if they can wear it for playtime.

I made this one for my youngest, who is 3, but it also fits my 5 and almost 7 year old. I love that crochet is stretchy so I can really get some miles out of the hats I make for my kids.

Rnd 7-13: Ch 2, dc in same st as ch 2, dc in each st around. Join with a sl st to top of 1st dc

Earflaps

For the first earflap just continue where you left off in Round 13.

Row 1: Ch 1, Hdc in same sp as ch 1, hdc in next 10 sts, turn (10)

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc2tog starting in same st as ch 1, Hdc in next 6, Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn (8)

Row 3: Ch 1, Hdc in same st as ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn (8)

Row 4: Ch 1, Hdc2tog starting in same st as ch 1, Hdc in next 4 sts, Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn (6)

Row 5: Ch 1, Hdc in same st as ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn (6)

Row 6: Ch 1, hdc2tog starting in same st as ch 1, Hdc in next 2, Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn (4)

Row 7: Ch 1, hdc2tog across starting in same st as ch 1 turn (2)

Row 8 Ch 1, Hdc2tog across starting in same st as ch 1, finish off.

Repeat Rows 1-8 for the second earflap. Fold your hat in half with more stitches in the front than the back and place the earflap so it lines up with the first one. See the picture below.

Border and Braids: Join your accent color (I used baby pink) to tip of earflap leaving a long tail because it will be incorporated into the braids. Sc evenly around the hat. Join to top of first sc with sl st. Finish off leaving a long tail.

For each braid cut 6 lengths of yarn about 36 inches in length. Using your hook pull the strands through corner of earflap so an even amount hangs on both sides of the earflap. Tie a knot in the top. Divide the yarn in 3 sections and braid. Tie knot at bottom. Trim. Be sure to make each braid the same length and also be sure to use the same tension.

Mane: Using the cream, Cut lengths of about 12 inches. Using 2 strands at a time, insert your hook through the backside of a double crochet and pull up a loop, yo and pull trough. Just like you are adding fringe to a project.

Start at the top, placing 1 group of “hair” in each dc in the magic circle. Fluff up the front with a few more groups placed in the double crochets from round 2.  Then add more “hair” in rows of 2  centered down 4 more rounds. Trim the mane so it is even with the bottom of the hat.

I would love this pattern in a variety of sizes. I want to make this for my 7 year old (which I think I can adjust accordingly). I also want to make this for a baby gift (3-6 month). I will attempt to adjust that as well, but if you publish other sizes, that would be awesome. Thank you so much for the free pattern. It is absolutely adorable and I cannot wait to make this for my little horse lover.
