This is block #11 of our 2021 Stash Busting Crochet Along. The Alpine Peaks Square was designed by Carolyn from The Purple Poncho and it has so much great texture!

Here is the original square made by Carolyn. Mine is pictured below. I chose to make mine in less colors so you could see how just changing color/stripe patterns changes the look of the square.

Pattern Notes
I really enjoyed the texture on this square. It features a center panel done in rows of the Alpine stitch. Then there is some hdc (and extended hdc) in the 3rd loop done in the round to finish it off with a nice border.
Size: Mine will be right on size when I go back and add the border round that I missed. {sigh} I suppose that explains why it originally ended a bit small. I completely did not even do round 4. Nobody’s perfect right!
Here’s what I did:
I used my 5mm Furls Streamline Swirl Hook (my new favorite!) and Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn.
I decided to do the center panel in a solid color so you could see a different version. It’s amazing how color changes can completely change how a stitch pattern looks.
When I do the Alpine stitch I usually use front post treble crochets but this version uses front post double crochets. I love the texture of this square so much.
Make sure you read the pattern notes on how to make the extended half double crochet and also when it says BLO in the pattern she is talking about the 3rd loop of the half double crochet (this is also stated in her pattern notes).
I followed her pattern to the letter except for forgetting round 4 of the border and the lack of color changes.
Once I fix my missing round problem I will block it lightly to make sure it’s nice and square.

I made a baby blanket using this stitch last year. It was the a new stitch for me. I had only been crocheting little over a year then. I really enjoyed this stitch and the blanket turned out beautifully.
Just started alpine center. I have been following your color suggestions. There doesn’t seem to be a way to carry colors on center block. I have to end each row for a 2 color center. Makes lots of ends to bury. Am I correct?
I must say, I love your square, but did not care for the colors in the original. The texture looks fabulous in your square. Kudoa!
