If you’ve been wanting the look of Tunisian crochet simple stitch but with a little more drape and less curl, then give the extended Tunisian Simple Stitch a try.

This is the 11th block in the Country Cottage Tunisian Sampler, our 2026 year-long crochet along. We are halfway!! It’s not too late to join the party. You can find all the details you need to get started here.

Every other week throughout the year, a new square pattern featuring a different Tunisian crochet stitch or technique will be released.

Print + Crochet in Comfort

You can find a low-cost AD-FREE printable version of this crochet pattern in my shop. You can print it out or use it digitally on your devices. This is a pre-order, so you will be sent a new PDF each time a square is released.

Extended Tunisian Crochet Stitch Basics

Making an extended Tunisian crochet stitch is a really easy variation on traditional Tunisian crochet. Work a basic Tunisian stitch (simple stitch, knit stitch, reverse stitch, etc) and then chain 1 before starting the next stitch.

This chain 1 will add some height and flexibility to your project. Of course, to compensate for the extra height added by the chain 1, you also need to chain 1 at the beginning of the row AND when completing the last stitch.

Projects I think would be great for this stitch:

  • Blankets
  • Scarves + Shawls
  • Sweaters

How to Crochet the Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch.

This week’s square features the Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch.

You might notice that we are also extending the stitches in our foundation row. This is the foundation row needed for any of the extended stitch variations.

Step 1: Chain any number and add 1 chain. Starting in the 3rd chain from your hook, pick up a loop and then chain 1 in each chain across. Then complete a standard return pass.

Step 2: Chain 1 to start your row. Then, working under the next vertical bar, insert your hook and pick up a loop and chain 1. Do this for each vertical bar across the row.

Step 3: Work the last stitch in the chain 1 of the last stitch from the previous row. Complete the standard return pass.

Repeat steps 2 & 3 for the pattern.

Extended Tunisian Crochet Simple Stitch Blanket Square Pattern

Foundation Row 1: **THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN THE STANDARD FOUNDATION ROW** Ch 36.  Insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, yo, pull up loop, ch 1. *insert hook into next ch, yo, pull up loop. Ch 1. Repeat from * across, keeping all loops on hook. (35 Loops). Complete standard return pass.

Row 2-End: Ch 1, Etss across until 1 bar remains. Lts in Ch 1 of previous row, Ch 1 (This ch 1 creates an extended lts). Complete standard return pass. For me this was 20 rows.

Bind off Row: Insert your hook under 2nd vertical bar. Yo, pull through the vertical bar and loop on your hook. *Insert your hook under next vertical bar, yo, pull through the vertical bar and loop on your hook. Repeat from * across. Continue to border.

Border: Do not finish off. Using 6 mm crochet hook, ch 1, sc evenly around, placing (sc, ch 2 sc) in each corner. Join to top of 1st sc with slst. Finish off, weave in ends. Block to 12 inches. (35 Sc on each side)

**Note: the number of single crochets worked on each raw edge should be the same number as the top and bottom edges.  You may have to add or subtract stitches to get 35 on the raw edges. Each square will have around 35 (+/- a couple stitches, depending on the stitch multiple) to make joining easy and flat.

  1. For the “this was 20 rows for me”, do you mean to make it a square? It doesn’t say how many rows to make the square or even if it has to be a square.
