Tunisian Crochet Bobble Stitch

Adding bobbles to your Tunisian crochet projects creates visual interest and a fun texture. Tunisian crochet bobbles are made just like standard crochet bobble stitches.

Every other week throughout the year, a new square pattern featuring a different Tunisian crochet stitch or technique will be released.

Tunisian crochet bobble stitches are an easy way to add texture and drama to your projects. They are worked exactly like standard crochet bobbles, utilizing a double crochet 5 stitches together, all worked in the same stitch. You can use almost any stitch as the background for your bobbles. For this square I used the Tunisian simple stitch.

Any number of stitches can be worked between your bobbles. You can make them offset like I did here or stack them in even rows, just keep in mind this will change your multiple. I like to sketch out a small swatch to figure out the number of stitches I need.

Tunisian Bobble Stitch Photo Tutorial

Step 1: Yo, insert hook knitwise. This means insert your hook through the center of the front and back vertical bar as if you were to make the Tunisian knit stitch.

Step 2: yo, pull up loop.

Step 3: yo, draw through 2 loops on hook.

Step 4: Repeat steps 1-3 four more times, working into same st.

Step 5: Yo, draw through 4 loops,

Step 6: yo, draw through 2 loops

Step 7: complete next stitch (tss in this case) and push bobble to front.

• 105 yds worsted weight yarn, I Love This Yarn used in sample
• 6.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook
• 6 mm crochet hook (for border)
• Scissors + Yarn Needle

Gauge and Sizing

• Gauge: 6 sts x 6 rows = 2 in
  • Worked in pattern stitch
• Finished Size: 12 in x 12 in after blocking

Special Stitches

Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS):  Insert hook from right to left under the vertical bar of the stitch, yarn over, pull up loop.

Last Tunisian Stitch (LTS): Insert hook from right to left under 2 vertical bars at edge of work, yarnover, pull up loop.

Standard Return Pass: yo, pull through 1 loop, *yo, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across until  1 loop remains on hook.

Bobble: Yo, insert hook knitwise, yo, pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook. Repeat 4 more times working into same st. Yo, draw through 4 loops, yo, draw through 1 loop

Notes

• Last loop on the hook after return pass counts as 1st loop of next row forward pass
• Curling = minimal
• To modify size, chain any multiple of 6+1

Tunisian Bobble Stitch Square Written Instructions

Row 1: Ch 37, Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up loop. * Insert hook into next ch, yo, pull up loop. Repeat from * across, keeping all loops on hook. (37 Loops). Complete standard return pass. 

Row 2-3: *TSS across until 1 bar remains unworked, LTS in final stitch. (37 loops). Complete standard return pass. 

Row 4: Tss in next 2 sts, *bobble in next. Tss in next 5. Repeat from * across ending final repeat after 2 tss. Lts in final stitch. (37 loops) Complete standard return pass. 

Row 5-7: As row 2.

Row 8: Tss 5, *Bobble in next, tss in next 5. Repeat from * across. Lts in final Stitch. (37 loops) Complete standard return pass. 

Row 9: as row 2. 

Row 10-End: repeat rows 2-9 until project is square. For me this was 34 rows. 

Border: Do not finish off. Using 6 mm crochet hook, ch 1, sc evenly around, placing (sc, ch 2 sc) in each corner. Join to top of 1st sc with slst. Finish off, weave in ends. Block to 12 inches. (37 Sc on each side)

**Note: the number of single crochets worked on each raw edge should be the same number as the top and bottom edges.  You may have to add or subtract stitches to get 37 on the raw edges. Each square will have around 36 (+/- a couple of stitches, depending on the stitch multiple) to make joining easy and flat.
