Today I have another installment of the Wildwood Collection. So far we have the cowl and chunky hat and today I am bringing you the Wildwood Slouchy Beanie.
This hat is worked in rounds from the bottom up using a worsted weight yarn. I chose Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in the color rust so it would complement my stripey cowl. I also added a couple cute wooden heart buttons from my stash to the brim and finished it off with a yarn pom-pom. I think one of those trendy faux fur poms would look really awesome too.

Materials and Pattern Information
- Less than 1 skein of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn ( 3.5 oz/170 yds 100% acrylic) or similar #4 worsted weight yarn
- 8mm/L crochet hook (I like this one.)
- Needle to weave in ends
- Scissors
- Pom-pom maker or Faux Fur Pom: optional
- Buttons
Gauge and Sizing
- Gauge: 5 stitches x 4 rows = 2 inches in the same pattern as the body of the hat
- Finished Hat Measures: 9.5 in wide x 10 in tall
Abbreviations
- I use US Terminology
- Ch(s): chain(s)
- Dc: double crochet
- Sc: single crochet
- Sl st: slip stitch
Notes
- If you would like to make this bigger or smaller, just crochet a starting chain with an odd number.
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch
Crochet Slouchy Hat Written Instructions
Rnd 1: Ch 47, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Join to 1st sc using a sl st, taking care not to twist row. Use the tail from beginning chains to join the bottom
Rnd 2-4: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1 and in each stitch around. Join to 1st sc with a sl st.
Rnd 5-22: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in same st as ch 1. *Skip 1 st, (sc, dc) in next. Repeat from * around. Skip last st. Join to 1st sc with sl st.
On last round finish off being sure to leave a long tail. Thread tail in tapestry needle and weave in and out through the stitches around the top of the hat. Pull tail to cinch closed. Weave in ends.
If desired add a yarn or faux fur pom-pom.

I am somewhat new to crochet and have not yet made a hat where you join as you work. I’m having a little trouble understanding your pattern. When you say “(sc, dc) in same st as ch 1” starting with round 5, do you you mean to actually crochet into the chain? After doing a few rounds, I’m getting a weird bump where the seam is.
Crochet into the stitch at the base of the ch 1.
This beanie is adorable! I would love to see a matching long scarf to go with it, please. Maybe you could add one to the collection? Thank you!

Hey Heather I just have one question. Is the first row of this hat the bottom (the brim) of the hat or the top? I am to lazy to go out and buy a new needle so I’m going to modify it to make it big enough. 🙂

An L hook?? My stitches are looking mighty big. Going to keep going and see what happens after a couple more rounds. Might need adjusting. Beautiful hat though.

Hi, is this adult or child sized?
This is adult size. ☺
With a width of 9.6″, the hat brim all the way around would be 19″. This puts it more in line of being a child’s hat. Everything I have seen about brim lengths has adult sizes starting at 21″.

Love this beanie. It’s my first time making it and I’m wondering if I was done something wrong. My seem is going at a slant instead if straight up and down. Is this right? I slip stitch and then chain one at the beginning of each row right?

Thank-you for all your great patterns.All are easily followed and exciting have pinned many of them .I have a large family here in Scotland and they all love homemade crochet/knitwear,including the babies (soft toys).I sometimes get muddled with the U.S terminology and U.K ,but I’m learning.

Hi Lynne, I’m sorry I don’t have a video for this pattern. The stitch is called the Grit Stitch, I’m sure there is a video tutorial out there. It is a single crochet and a double crochet worked in the same stitch, then skip 1 stitch, then single crochet and double crochet in the same stitch, then skip 1 stitch… and it goes on like that. Does that help at all? I know sometimes those abbreviations seam likevalot to take in.

Thanks for the pattern! I’m just wondering for your gauge, what measurement the 5 stitches and 4 rows should be (I.e. 2”x2”?)
