This autumn-inspired crochet bunting features quick and easy fall applique crochet patterns that will make your home feel like fall.
The idea for this crochet pattern came when I saw a sewing pattern for a bunting featuring pumpkins. Things escalated from there, and I ended up with a pumpkin, heart, sunflower, falling leaves and some surface crochet scripty letters.
You can customize this pattern by making more or fewer base flags and appliques. You could even use the appliques on other crochet projects!
I wasn’t sure if I should call this a garland or a bunting. It turns out, a garland uses more 3-D type objects and a bunting uses flat flag type items.

Crochet Heart Applique Pattern
I wrote this pattern a couple of years ago and turned it into these felted Christmas ornaments. For this bunting, I added a surface crochet detail between rounds 1 and 2.

Surface Crochet
Using coordinating color (orange shown in sample), surface crochet all the way around in spaces between rnd 1 & 2.

Sew or glue onto the project.
‘Fall’ Surface Crochet
The trick to mastering surface crochet is keeping your tension even, not to tight and not to loose.

Use the surface crochet technique we learned on the heart applique to crochet the word ‘Fall’ on your bunting flag.
Choose a color that contrasts with your flag color. I chose to use a charcoal gray.
You may have to start and stop a few times to get the letters to look correct.
Assembly Instructions
If you haven’t done so already, glue or sew your appliques onto the flags. I chose to use hot glue because it was faster and just as sturdy.

To join them together in a line, decide on an order. You can copy mine or choose your own.
Line them up in order, ch 25 with your chosen joining color.

Then sc across the top of the flag furthest to the right, *ch 10, sc across next flag. Repeat from * across all flags. Ch 25 after end of final flag.
To change the spacing of your flags do more or less chains between and at the beginning and end.

Hi Heather, I love this flag idea. I tried to reply to your email but it keeps bouncing back – yes, please consider a Christmas themed flag, or even one for each season!
Thanks so much Heather. These are so much fun to make and I look forward to each days new applique.
